As far as performance-oriented wagons are concerned, the more luxurious part of the market has – for years – been dominated by BMW’s M5 Touring and Audi’s RS6 Avant. These two wagons have proven themselves to be proper contenders and their popularity is, thus, understandable.

But, you might be wondering where Mercedes is in all of this. Well, the company had a major player at one point, the E63 S, but at one point, the model became an order-exclusive and it somehow fell into oblivion.

But it seems that Mercedes is back, and based on what we know about the new model, we’re in for a treat!

The new Mercedes-AMG E 53 Hybrid Wagon model is coming out in 2026, and as you might have guessed, it is going to be a five-door wagon version of the Affalterbach-engineered performance sedan.

Like the sedan, the upcoming model will have the six-pot-based plug-in hybrid powertrain, which utilizes a 3-liter turbocharged inline-six-cylinder engine in combination with a permanently excited synchronous electric motor connected to a battery.

The electric aspect of the hybrid has been dubbed by Mercedes as the ‘P2’ hybrid powertrain, which will have a 161-horsepower electric motor integrated into the Speedshift 9-speed automatic box. Alongside that, the model will have a 400-volt, 28.6-kWh battery that will, in combination, enable speeds up to 87 miles per hour.

The new model will also have a Race Start system that will boost the wagon’s performance, as well as multiple upgrade packages, so there is a lot to look forward to.
