Subaru’s Sales Are Fluctuating, But the BRZ and the Solterra EV Are Surprising Winners
The car market is a volatile one at this moment and it’s mostly due to the uncertainty caused by Trump’s tariff plans, but that is something we have written about extensively here, so you probably know the whole story by now.
This report will be an individual one focused on Subaru, as the company has had some interesting sales facts that we wanted to report on.
Namely, the company’s been enjoying a solid rise in sales until last May, when the numbers started fluctuating, but even in such a state, the BRZ has been enjoying some success.
As you know, a lot of automakers had record-breaking numbers before Trump’s tariffs became a proper thing. When the tariffs became an issue, the uncertainty caused the numbers to fluctuate or even to drop. Subaru is no exception.
When compared to May 2024, Subaru sold almost 6,000 vehicles less than last month, which is a significant drop that illustrates just how the uncertainty is influencing the market. For example, the Subaru WRX tumbled a high 71.2 percent year-over-year, selling less than 500 vehicles last month. On a year-over-year basis, the car experienced a 23.6 percent drop, which is the largest decline among the brand’s lineup.
But, while the general numbers are on a downward spiral, the company’s only sports car model, the Subaru BRZ, saw a massive rise.
The numbers show that the BRZ saw a massive 43.6 percent rise when compared to May 2024, which helped the model to a total 24.6 percent rise year-over-year. This is the second-biggest rise for Subaru, alongside the 28.4 percent increase seen by the Solterra EV, which is another positive surprise.
And while the percentage is good, we have to say that Subaru sold only 227 BRZ coupes in May of 2024, which means that this increase means just 326 cars sold in May 2025, but it’s still a solid increase.
