PlayStation’s Hideaki Nishino Praises Switch 2 Record Launch, But Is Not Worried About the Competition: “We have a differentiated strategy.”

As you’ve probably heard from numerous sources – including us – the Nintendo Switch 2 has been doing extremely well, selling 3.5 million units worldwide in the first four days since its launch.
This is an amazing number, really, and it beat some previous records as well. Comparatively, the first Switch and Sony’s PlayStation 5 respectively sold 2.7 million and 3.4 million units in their first month, so you can see how great this achievement is.
In light of that, Hideaki Nishino, president and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, was recently asked about that, i.e., whether he considered the Switch 2 a competition for Sony’s PlayStation 5. And he gave a very interesting reply.
It took the PlayStation 5 a whole month to sell less than the Switch 2 did in just four days. Okay, the PlayStation 5 arrived at a different time and there was a serious shortage of consoles, but still! Nintendo, of course, learned from Sony’s experience and that played a major part in this, but that doesn’t undermine the result.
Nishino praised that result and claimed that the numbers were good both for the competition on the market, as well as the gaming industry as a whole, which is a fact. But when asked whether he was worried about these results in any way – he gave a negative reply.
“We have a differentiated strategy. PS5 is designed for an immersive gaming experience, and this includes the innovative DualSense controller features as well. We believe PS5-level performance is required to achieve a great experience on big screens. And in this way, we have provided a unique offering for players and creators in this current console generation,” Nishino explained.
But while PlayStation does have some truly amazing exclusives, there are two things to note here. First, Nintendo does as well. Second, multi-platform releases are becoming more and more frequent, so it is difficult for PlayStation to maintain its exclusivity.
“We have empowered our creators to leverage our offering and services to create amazing, unique experiences for players with high engagement and great monetization opportunities,” he explained further, talking about the exclusives. “We have done this consistently as the industry and competitive dynamics have evolved. And of course, PlayStation Studios, our franchises, have a special role in showcasing the PlayStation experience and then strengthening the player’s vision with us.”
And this is also true. Both viewpoints are, actually. And while we don’t know who will end up as the winner of this “war,” if we’re even dealing with a “war” here, we know that it is great that both consoles are doing great and that the gaming industry and the gamers will benefit from these record-breaking numbers.
