Mazda’s New EZ-60 SUV Is Big, Powerful, and Ready to Take On Tesla
Mazda is making a big move in the electric car world with its new SUV, the EZ-60. It’s a sleek, modern vehicle designed to compete with the Tesla Model Y. The EZ-60 was recently shown off in official photos, and now we know even more about it, including that it will come in a special version with a gas engine that charges the battery, called a range-extender.
This SUV is huge. It’s even heavier than a Ram 1500 pickup truck, weighing about 5,709 pounds (2,590 kg). That’s because of its large battery and strong frame. It sits on a platform called EPA1, which is also used by another Chinese electric SUV, the Deepal S07.
The EZ-60 will be sold as a fully electric SUV, but there will also be a version with a small gas engine. This engine doesn’t drive the wheels. Instead, it works like a generator to charge the car’s battery. The engine is a 1.5-liter, four-cylinder engine, and it charges a 31.7 kWh battery pack. That battery then powers a 255-horsepower electric motor that drives the rear wheels.
Mazda hasn’t shared the EZ-60’s full driving range yet. But if it’s anything like the smaller EZ-6 sedan, we can expect about 99 miles (160 km) of driving on just the battery and up to 808 miles (1,300 km) when the gas engine is helping.
The EZ-60 isn’t just powerful — it’s also pretty stylish. The design is based on Mazda’s Arata concept, and it has a sharp, sporty look. There’s a slim LED light bar under the front grille, and even the Mazda logo lights up.

For comparison, the Tesla Model Y is a bit smaller in every direction.
Outside of China, this SUV will be called the CX-6e, and it will be Mazda’s big push into electric cars around the world. The company has had a slow start in the EV market — the MX-30 didn’t do well — but the EZ-60 looks like it could change that.
Mazda is still doing well with gas-powered cars, but it knows the future is electric. The EZ-60 (or CX-6e) shows that the company is ready to compete in the growing EV market. With its bold design, strong performance, and range-extender option, this SUV might just be Mazda’s best shot yet.
