Global EV Sales Are Breaking Records, With China Being the Biggest Winner

Any serious observer of the automobile industry will tell you that electric vehicles are the future of automobiles, and that statement makes a lot of sense. With fossil fuels slowly being drained and unsafe for the environment, going electric makes sense.
Of course, there’s still a lot of work ahead of us, but the EV market is a growing one and the latest numbers we have confirm that.
Namely, the sales data for May confirms that EV sales numbers are at a record high and there is one market that significantly surpasses all the others.
According to the latest data, EV sales around the world have set a new record thanks to a very successful May. A total of 1.6 million EVs were sold in May around the world, which is an increase from April that brought the yearly total to 7.2 million, a new record. When compared to the same period in 2024, it is an increase of almost 30%:
- Global: 7.2 million (+28%)
- China: 4.4 million (+33%)
- Europe: 1.6 million (+27%)
- North America: 0.7 million (+3%)
- Rest of World: 0.6 million (+36%)
As you can see, China is the leading global market when it comes to EVs, and they alone account for 1 million of all the total sales in May. The Chinese market is an enormous one and with the government endorsing EV sales, it isn’t a surprise that the numbers are on a constant rise.
Europe has a steady increase of just under 30%, and it is also a growing market, with more and more European countries giving various benefits for EV buyers, and it seems that the trend is going to expand even more.
And while North America saw a small rise when compared to 2024, it is a slow-growing market that could suffer even more in the years to come. Canada’s seen some major changes when it comes to EV policies, and Trump’s administration is intent on eliminating any and all benefits for EV buyers.
A surge is expected in the U.S. in the last months of 2025, as buyers will want to cash in on the tax credit while it’s still available, but after that – the future is very much unclear.
Regardless of the situation in North America, the global numbers are still very positive, and so is the outlook when it comes to the future of EVs.
