The car market is generally known for its volatility and from time to time, a crisis can occur due to various reasons. As of the time of writing, we are currently experiencing a crisis that was caused by some questionable political decisions by one man.

The man is Donald Trump, the President of the United States, whose fight against electric vehicles and his tariff policies have resulted in chaos, and no one is sure how that will impact the consumers and owners.

As it stands now, the future of the U.S. auto industry is unclear, while international companies are reacting in their own way, and the German giant, BMW, has just made their intentions clear.

As a reaction to the current state of the market, BMW has informed its U.S. partners that it will be halting EV production as of May. The duration of this measure is unknown, but the company has stated that the prices will remain stable through June.

As of the time of writing, it is unknown which models will be affected, so it is possible that this will affect just certain models, but it is possible that it will affect all of the brand’s EVs. Either was, it is going to be a shame, as BMW has been getting strong sales numbers recently.

Just to make it clear, in just the first quarter of 2025, BMW sold 13,538 EVs in the US, representing a 26% year-over-year increase. The i4 sedan led sales with a 57% surge, while the iX crossover rose 23%, while we also have the i5 and the i7 models, as well as the upcoming Neue Klasse series.

As the market is yet to feel the full impact of Trump’s policies, we are heading into uncharted territory. Trump will either be crowned a genius (from a U.S. perspective) or a madman (from a general perspective), depending on what the tariffs do to the economy, but everyone agrees that the impact is going to be significant.

But, on the other hand, maybe Trump changes his mind until then, as he’s done several times in the last couple of months, so… who knows!
