BMW to Add DeepSeek AI to Its New Cars in China Later This Year

BMW has announced that it will start using artificial intelligence (AI) from Chinese tech company DeepSeek in its new cars in China by the end of this year.
This step is part of BMW’s effort to support local innovation and work more closely with Chinese technology companies.
BMW’s CEO Oliver Zipse said this new partnership fits into the company’s plan to create tech solutions made for specific regions. He explained, “The partnership aligns with the company’s broader approach to building region-specific technological solutions.”
DeepSeek’s AI is already popular among other big Chinese car brands like BYD, Geely, and Great Wall. Now, BMW will use it to improve smart features in its cars. The AI is known for being affordable and efficient, yet it works as well as similar technology from Western companies.
This isn’t the first time BMW has teamed up with Chinese tech firms. In fact, China is where BMW has its biggest R&D (research and development) network outside of Germany, with centers in Beijing, Shanghai, and Shenyang.
Back in 2019, BMW was the first premium car brand to add Alibaba’s Tmall Genie voice assistant to its vehicles. The company also worked with Tencent to build the D³ platform, made specifically for China’s traffic.
Now, the new partnership with DeepSeek will go beyond voice assistants. It will help with things like self-driving features and smart cockpit functions, making the driving experience more advanced and comfortable.
Experts believe the global market for automotive AI is growing fast. It’s expected to grow by 55% every year until 2032. China is quickly becoming a major center for this kind of innovation.
DeepSeek’s AI is open-source and scalable, which means it’s easier and cheaper for car companies to use and grow. This makes it attractive not just in China, but also to international automakers.
By working with DeepSeek, BMW is showing it wants to lead the way in AI-powered vehicles in China. As the car industry moves toward software-based vehicles and smarter digital features, BMW is making sure it stays ahead of the game.
