Toyota’s smallest car is getting a major upgrade. The 2026 Aygo X Hybrid looks a lot like the current model, but it’s been completely redesigned underneath. It now uses a hybrid system taken from the bigger Yaris Hybrid and no longer offers a manual gearbox. Instead, every version comes with Toyota’s e-CVT automatic transmission.

Power is way up. The new Aygo X Hybrid produces 114bhp and 144Nm of torque, a big jump from the old 1.0-litre petrol engine which only had 71bhp and 93Nm. It’s also much quicker now, going from 0 to 62mph in about 10 seconds, nearly five seconds faster than before.

Fuel efficiency is better too. Toyota says the new hybrid setup could emit as little as 86g/km of CO2, which means it might become one of the cleanest petrol-powered cars on the road. Fuel economy could reach around 67 to 70 miles per gallon.

The Aygo X Hybrid has a new front design because the hybrid system needed more space. The nose is 76mm longer and has a new grille, bonnet, and lights. Designers say that side-by-side, it looks wider and tougher. New 17 and 18-inch wheels and a black roof are included, and there’s even a bright mustard yellow color for the sportier GR Sport version.

Inside, there’s a new center console, electronic parking brake, wireless phone charger, and extra USB-C ports. Top versions also get a clean air filter and folding mirrors. A new seven-inch digital display and infotainment panel are part of the updates, although Toyota hasn’t said what software it will use yet.

The GR Sport model stands out with its unique design, upgraded suspension, and better brakes. It was built with help from Toyota’s performance team, Gazoo Racing. It includes GR-branded seats, custom wheels, and a gloss black bonnet.

Safety is also improved with features like lane keeping, automatic emergency braking, traffic sign alerts, and a system that can stop the car if the driver becomes unresponsive. Toyota has added over-the-air updates for the first time on the Aygo X too, so safety systems can stay up to date.

The boot remains at 231 litres, which is smaller than rivals like the Hyundai i10. And because of the hybrid setup, there’s no space-saver spare wheel anymore. Still, the car fits four adults and is expected to remain cheap to insure.

Toyota says pricing will go up. The new Aygo X Hybrid will start around £19,000, compared to the current model’s £16,000 price tag. But with better fuel economy, cleaner emissions, more power, and new tech, Toyota believes it will offer a smoother and more refined driving experience. As Toyota’s Romero put it, “We don’t do mild-hybrid when it comes to small cars.”

The 2026 Aygo X Hybrid will arrive in early 2026, with full details expected closer to launch.
