After staying pretty quiet for a while, General Motors is finally talking about the future of the Chevy Bolt. According to a recent announcement from the company, the next-generation Bolt EV will enter production later this year and hit the market as a 2027 model. The news came as part of a $4 billion investment across three U.S. factories, which also includes plans for other gas and electric vehicles.

GM says the upcoming Bolt will be built at its Fairfax plant in Kansas City, Kansas. That same factory will also produce another affordable EV, though the company didn’t give any details about what that model will be.

We still don’t know much about the new Bolt either, but it’s expected to stick to its subcompact hatchback or small SUV style, similar to the previous EUV version.

The company originally said back in 2023 that a new Bolt would arrive by 2025. Now, it looks like it’ll land closer to 2026 since it’s being labeled as a 2027 model. That means we should see an official reveal sometime soon.

Besides the Bolt, GM is also planning to move production of the gas-powered Equinox SUV to the Kansas plant starting in mid-2027. It’s already being made in Mexico, but Fairfax will help boost output. The company also said that this factory will get more updates to handle that second new affordable EV.

Over in Tennessee, GM has another big surprise. Its Spring Hill factory, which currently builds electric Cadillacs like the Lyriq and the Vistiq, will start making a new gas-powered version of the Chevrolet Blazer in 2027. This comes as a bit of a twist, especially since earlier reports suggested the Blazer was on its way out after 2025. But with this new plan, it seems like GM is working on a new generation of the SUV.

There are changes coming to Michigan as well. GM’s Orion Assembly plant was supposed to start making the electric Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra in 2024, but that got pushed to 2025.

Now, the plan’s changed again, Orion will build gas-powered trucks and full-size SUVs starting in early 2027 instead. That means those electric pickups will be made at Factory Zero in Detroit, which will also handle Cadillac’s Escalade IQ and the Hummer EV.

This shift shows GM is adjusting to what buyers want right now. While EV sales aren’t exploding like some expected, gas-powered trucks and SUVs are still doing really well. By bringing more production back to the U.S. from Mexico and Canada, GM is also keeping its biggest sellers closer to home.

GM hasn’t shared pricing or full specs for the next-gen Bolt, but it’s likely to stay affordable, around the $30,000 mark. With a clearer timeline now in place, more details should be coming soon.
