Ford Fiesta Could Make a Comeback with Help from Volkswagen

The beloved Ford Fiesta might be coming back — and it could return as a modern electric car. Ford and Volkswagen are reportedly exploring more projects together after the success of their previous work, and that may open the door for the Fiesta’s return.

The last Ford Fiesta was built in July 2023 at the factory in Cologne, Germany. Its end marked a big change in the car market. But now, thanks to a strong partnership with Volkswagen, things could be changing again. This partnership already brought us the electric Ford Explorer and Capri, both built using VW’s electric platforms.

Martin Sander, Volkswagen’s head of sales and marketing, and a former Ford executive, said the first deal was “very, very, very successful” and added: “I do not want to rule out that there are future opportunities here to share technology again.

This opens the possibility that Ford could use VW’s MEB Entry platform, the same base for VW’s upcoming ID.1 and ID.2 models. A new electric Fiesta built on this platform could have a driving range of up to 280 miles and support fast charging at speeds up to 125kW.

Ford’s current entry-level car, the Puma, is still selling well, but with prices starting at over £26,500, it’s no longer a low-cost option. Small, affordable cars like the Fiesta and Focus have become hard to make profitably. That’s part of why Ford stopped selling them.

Although Ford hasn’t confirmed any new small electric car, the company did say: “[Ford] is confident in its ability to compete in the right segments.”

That means Ford is watching the market closely and could return to small cars if the time is right.

If a new electric Fiesta is made, it might look similar to the VW ID.2all concept. That car is close in size to the old Fiesta, and its wider shape and low battery could help give it the same fun-to-drive feeling Fords are known for.
