‘The Last of Us 2’s’ PC Launch Falls Short of First Game’s Success
The launch of The Last of Us 2 on PC has been a success, but it didn’t quite hit the high marks set by the original game. The sequel reached a peak of 30,690 concurrent players over its first weekend, which is a decent number.
However, it still falls short of the The Last of Us‘s launch stats, which reached almost 36,500 players at its peak.
While player numbers don’t always directly translate to sales, the opening weekend usually shows the highest level of interest for a game. After that, the player count typically drops unless there are big discounts or new content.
In comparison, The Last of Us: Part I has stayed popular on PC, consistently attracting thousands of players every day. This is because it’s a single-player game, and players tend to finish it once, so its appeal remains steady over time. Since its release, the sequel has hovered above 10,000 concurrent players, which is a bit lower than its predecessor’s peak.

This news comes shortly after Neil Druckmann, the creator of The Last of Us, mentioned that there might not be a third game. In an interview, he said, “Don’t bet on there being more of ‘The Last of Us.’ This could be it.”
He explained that he treats each project as if it could be his last, making sure to put everything into the work. For him, the first The Last of Us and Uncharted 4 each had a definitive ending because he wasn’t sure if he would ever get to continue those stories.
Druckmann also mentioned that for there to be a third The Last of Us, many things would need to fall into place. Right now, he’s focused on the upcoming HBO series for The Last of Us and a new game called Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. He emphasized that he’s working on one project at a time, aiming to make each one the best it can be.
While the numbers for The Last of Us 2’s PC launch may not have set new records, the game continues to be enjoyed by fans around the world, and the series’ future remains uncertain. For now, Druckmann and the team are focused on the present, hoping to make their next projects as great as possible.
