The Mazda MX-5, better known as the Mazda Miata in North America, has been around since 1989 and it is one of the company’s most recognizable cars. Noted for their small, light, balanced and minimalist design, these cars became very popular very quickly.

Since then, Mazda has released several different versions of the Miata, each of them bringing something new to the lineup. A new model is coming for 2026, and based on the information we have, it is going to have a major improvement.

Mazda Chief Technical Officer (CTO) Ryuichi Umeshita has recently revealed an interesting piece of information about the new model, and we wanted to share it with you here.

Based on the information we have, Mazda aims to bring us the most affordable and efficient sports car on the market, a car that will be able to reconcile the needs of a proper sports car and the volatility of the market.

How does Mazda aim to achieve that? Well, Umeshita seems to have a clear idea, taking into account the main feature of the model. “What defines the MX-5…I would say the most important thing is that it is lightweight,” he said in a recent interview.

“That is the key — whatever the future MX-5 is, it must be very light,” he added, before revealing more precise details about the company’s plans. “We are considering making it less than one tonne in weight.”

And while we don’t know the details, having a model with a stronger engine that, at the same time, weighs less seems to us like a revolution in the sports cars market and we’re hopeful that Mazda will be able to deliver on its promises next year.
