New Electric BMW 1 Series Coming in 2028

BMW is planning a big change for one of its smallest cars. A brand-new BMW 1 Series is coming around 2028, and it will include an electric version. This new car will be part of BMW’s “Neue Klasse” family, which is the company’s new generation of electric vehicles.
While other brands like Mercedes-Benz and Audi are stopping some of their smaller models, BMW is doing the opposite. Mercedes is ending the A-Class, and Audi is stopping the A1 and Q2. But BMW believes the 1 Series still matters.
At the Shanghai motor show, BMW product boss Bernd Körber said: “We are a global player and we cover the full portfolio; the entry models have a very important role to play for various reasons.”
He explained that in some countries like Italy and France, the 1 Series is very popular. In some areas, it makes up 20%, 30%, or even 40% of BMW’s sales. That’s why BMW wants to keep selling this car.
Körber also said that the 1 Series helps younger people start their journey with the brand.
“The 1 Series is especially important for younger customers. If you want to keep the brand young… the 1 Series is very important.”
He added that staying in the small car market helps BMW stay sharp and competitive.“To retreat out of the small car segment means you get out of the challenge of being the most cost-efficient player.”
BMW has not shared any official details about the new 1 Series yet. But it’s expected to offer both petrol and electric versions. That means it will compete with regular cars like the Volkswagen Golf and Audi A3, but also newer electric cars like the Cupra Born and Renault Megane E-Tech.
The new 1 Series will likely come after BMW launches other Neue Klasse models, starting with the new iX3 SUV in September. A new 3 Series and updated 5 Series are also on the way.
