About 14,000 Volkswagen ID.4 and Audi Q4 E-Tron EVs are being recalled in the U.S. due to an error with the 12-volt battery chargers. The exact number includes a total of 13,769 cars, but it is estimated that only about 10% of these cars will have the defect in question.

The news has been reported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on their site, as their website provides more details on the issue and how it is going to be handled by Volkswagen Group of America, which is in charge of the U.S. market when these two models are concerned.

So, what exactly is the issue? As said, the 12-volt battery chargers are to blame, as they might fail at one point, which could lead to the car losing power while driving. The affected models are the 2024 Volkswagen ID.4, 2024-2025 Audi Q4 E-Tron and 2024-2025 Audi Q4 E-Tron Sportback.

The core of the issue is the condensation that might form inside the car’s onboard charger that has an integrated DC-to-DC converter (OCDC). This issue further causes electromigration on the board, which may lead to the OCDC failing to charge the battery, and you can imagine how many problems that would cause. The car might fail to start completely, or if the battery is emptied while driving, it could increase the risk of crashing.

Luckily, the fix is simple. Your local Volkswagen and Audi dealers will simply replaye the OCDC with a new model, a better one, completely free of charge, so be sure to do what is needed for your own and the safety of others if your car is affected by this recall message.
