The mobile industry is preparing to leave the current memory standard behind, as reports indicate that 16GB of RAM will no longer define the top tier of smartphone performance. According to reputable tech leaker Digital Chat Station, manufacturers are rapidly shifting their focus toward even higher capacities for their next generation of flagship devices.
A new benchmark of 24GB of RAM is emerging, with major Chinese brands leading the charge. This move is spearheaded by the “Oga” group, which encompasses popular manufacturers like OnePlus, OPPO, and Realme.
For a long time, 16GB was considered an excessive amount of memory, often compared to what is found in high-end desktop computers. Now, it appears this capacity will soon be relegated to a baseline specification for premium handsets rather than the ultimate feature.
The primary motivation for this hardware leap is the increasing demand from custom Android user interfaces, such as ColorOS. These systems require substantial resources to keep numerous applications running smoothly in the background without the need to reload them.
By implementing 24GB of LPDDR5X memory, companies aim to offer a seamless multitasking experience that eliminates lag entirely. While this sounds impressive on paper, it inevitably raises questions about diminishing returns for the average consumer.
Many users currently find that 12GB or even 8GB of RAM is more than sufficient for gaming and daily productivity. As the industry pushes these numbers higher, the line between innovation and marketing strategy becomes increasingly blurred.
