Renault Reveals the Electric Turbo 3E: A Modern Take on the Classic Hot Hatch

Renault has revealed the exterior of its highly anticipated electric car, the Renault 5 Turbo 3E. This new electric vehicle is a fresh version of the iconic Renault 5 Turbo, blending the old-school design of the 1980s with advanced electric performance.
After being introduced as a concept at the 2022 Paris Motor Show, the company has now shown off the car’s final design at their headquarters near Paris.
The 5 Turbo 3E stands out with its bold yellow and black colors, inspired by the famous 1982 Renault 5 Turbo rally car. The car’s design features a wide body, aggressive front bumper, and large rear wing extensions, paying tribute to the spirit of the original Turbo.
Renault calls the 5 Turbo 3E its most powerful and technologically advanced car to date. The company claims that it’s the world’s first “electric mini-supercar.” Although it shares some elements with the Renault 5 E-Tech, such as the rear lights and wing mirrors, the 5 Turbo 3E is built on a completely new platform.
The car has a wider stance and a longer wheelbase, making it feel like a supercar, but it still has the compact size of a city car.
This car is designed for performance and fun driving. Unlike the E-Tech model, the 5 Turbo 3E is rear-wheel drive and features electric motors in each rear wheel. This setup provides quick, smooth power delivery with no delay, making it a thrilling ride.
With 540 horsepower, the car can reach a top speed of 168 mph and accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.5 seconds. The lightweight carbon fiber body and advanced technology help boost these impressive numbers.
The car is also equipped with an 800-volt system, allowing for extremely fast charging. With a compatible charger, it can go from 15% to 80% charge in just 15 minutes.
Not only is the 5 Turbo 3E built for speed, but it’s also designed for fun, especially for those who enjoy drifting. The car’s rear-wheel drive and instant power delivery make it ideal for sliding around corners.
Renault has also added a vertical handbrake, similar to those used in rally cars, to enhance the driving experience.
While the exterior has been revealed, the interior of the 5 Turbo 3E remains a secret. Renault promises it will match the excitement of the outside, with bucket seats, six-point harnesses, and a rally-inspired dashboard.
Buyers will have the chance to work with Renault’s design team to customize the interior to their liking, offering a high level of personalization.
Renault will produce just 1,980 units of the 5 Turbo 3E, a nod to the year the original Turbo was released. Although the exact price hasn’t been officially confirmed, estimates suggest it will start at around £130,000 ($168,000).
With the customization options available, prices could rise to £200,000 ($260,000), putting it in the same range as luxury cars like Aston Martins or McLaren Arturas.
Even with its high price, there is expected to be strong demand for the 5 Turbo 3E. Pre-orders are expected to open soon, and Renault could sell out the entire production run before the car’s interior is even seen by customers. If all 1,980 units are sold, Renault could make over $500 million from the sale of this electric mini-supercar.
The Renault 5 Turbo 3E looks set to be a major hit in the world of electric cars, combining the thrill of a high-performance car with modern electric technology.
