Owlcat Reveals The Expanse: Osiris Reborn, A New Sci-Fi RPG Inspired by Mass Effect

Owlcat Games has revealed its next big title, and it’s heading to space. The Expanse: Osiris Reborn is a brand-new action RPG set in the world of the popular sci-fi TV series The Expanse.
Known for their deep, isometric RPGs like Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous and Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader, Owlcat is now switching things up with a third-person, story-heavy action game that leans heavily into the Mass Effect style of gameplay.
This new game puts players in the role of a Pinkwater Security mercenary caught on Eros Station during a deadly lockdown.
From there, you build a crew, take control of a ship, and travel across the solar system. You’ll visit places like Mars, Ganymede, Luna, and Ceres—key locations fans of the books and show will know well.
Owlcat’s Creative Director Alexander Mishulin talked about how excited the team is to finally dive into a sci-fi universe like this. “We’ve been dreaming about building a sci-fi action RPG of this scale for a long time, and The Expanse is the perfect universe to bring that vision to life,” he said. “It’s a world grounded in realism and complexity, perfect for telling a story how we like — mature and character-driven, where your choices truly matter.”
Yuliya Chernenko, the game’s design producer, added that the original Mass Effect trilogy had a big influence on their work. “It was iconic for the Xbox 360 generation of gamers,” she said. “Many of us first played it in our teenage years, and it left a lasting impression. We are building on that legacy and expanding what players anticipate from this experience.”
In The Expanse: Osiris Reborn, you create your own captain—whether you’re from Earth, Mars, or the Belt, and lead a squad of characters, each with their own backstories and motivations. You can even romance companions. Combat is third-person with cover mechanics and real-time action. Just like in Mass Effect, you’ll bring two companions into the field, with the rest supporting from the sidelines.
The story takes place during the early part of the series, lining up with the first two and a half seasons of the show, or the first two books.
That means the events of the game will be happening at the same time as some of the major moments from the original story, though you’ll be off on your own path.
Owlcat didn’t name any actors yet, but said familiar characters will return, and some cast members from the show are involved. No release date has been given either, but the game is listed as “coming soon” and will be available on Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
Owlcat is juggling quite a bit right now. Alongside The Expanse: Osiris Reborn, they’re also working on DLC for Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader and a newly announced game called Warhammer 40,000: Dark Heresy. Still, they made it clear that this space RPG is a top priority. In their own words, “The team behind The Expanse: Osiris Reborn is completely separate from Owlcat’s other projects and will not hinder excellence elsewhere.”
