Nintendo has shared new details about the upcoming Switch 2, including how big the games will be. This helps us figure out how much storage you’ll need if you plan to download games instead of buying physical copies.

The Switch 2 will come with 256GB of internal storage. That’s eight times more than the original Switch, which had just 32GB. While that sounds like a lot, games are also getting bigger, so you might use up that space faster than expected.

So far, we know the sizes of some of the launch games. Here’s a breakdown:

  • Mario Kart World – This is the biggest game at launch. It takes up 23.4GB, which is almost 10% of the total storage.
  • Donkey Kong Bananza – This one is 10GB, a little less than half the size of Mario Kart World.
  • GameCube Nintendo Classics Collection – This is a bundle of three older games: The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, Soul Calibur 2, and F-Zero GX. The total size is 3.5GB, so each game is about 1GB or a bit more.
  • Super Mario Party Jamboree – This updated version takes up 7.7GB.
  • Kirby and the Forgotten Land – This one needs 5.7GB of space.

Altogether, if you downloaded all these games, you’d use about 50GB. That means you’d still have room for several more games before needing extra storage.

Even with more powerful hardware, Nintendo games tend to be smaller in size compared to games on other consoles like the PlayStation or Xbox. One reason might be that Nintendo uses smart ways to compress data, so games still look great without taking up too much space.

Also, the Switch 2 will use technology from Nvidia that improves graphics with AI-powered upscaling. This means games can look better without using extra space.

When you do eventually run out of space, you’ll need to get a microSD Express card. These are special memory cards that are faster and work with the Switch 2. But be careful — the microSD cards from the original Switch won’t work with the new system, so you’ll need to buy new ones. That’s an extra cost to keep in mind.

Nintendo is also pushing more people toward buying digital games instead of physical cartridges. Digital games are usually cheaper, but they take up more space on your system. Physical games don’t need as much storage, but they are expected to cost more. So if you choose digital, you might need more storage sooner.
