If your Xbox storage is running low, there’s a new feature in the works that will make it easier to free up space. Xbox Insiders can now test an updated “Free Up Space” tool that offers an improved way to manage your storage. This new feature is part of the latest Xbox update preview, which has been released to the Alpha Skip-Ahead ring.

The updated “Free Up Space” feature makes it simpler to clear storage when you’re running out of space on your console. In the past, the Xbox would only show you add-ons or games that could be shrunk to save space. But with this new update, Xbox will now give you recommendations, such as removing duplicate files or deleting games you no longer have access to.

This makes it even easier to clear out unnecessary data and free up room for more games or updates.

To use this feature, just go to My Games & Apps > Manage > Free Up Space. You’ll see a list of suggestions and options that will help you make the most out of your storage.

This update is part of the Xbox Update Preview, and it comes with other changes too. The update is available for Xbox Insiders to try, and it will be rolled out automatically for those with the Keep My Console Up to Date setting enabled. If you want to update manually, you can do so by pressing the Xbox button on your controller, then going to Profile & System > Settings > System > Updates.

The full update will be mandatory for all users on March 15, 2025, at 3:00 a.m. PT.

Along with the “Free Up Space” feature, the update also includes various improvements to ensure that local languages are correctly displayed across the console. However, some users may notice odd text during the preview, which is a known issue.
