New Switch 2 Dev Kit Rumors Appear Before Nintendo’s Big Announcement

With Nintendo expected to reveal more about the Switch 2 soon, new rumors about its development kits have started spreading. Reports suggest that third-party game developers are getting access to the kits in different phases.

According to John Linneman from Digital Foundry, many developers, especially smaller ones, still don’t have access to the new hardware. He said: “I think there will be third-party games early on of course, it just seems like a lot of medium to small developers still do not have access to development hardware.“

It seems Nintendo is being careful about who gets the kits. Another industry expert, Imran Khan, shared on ResetEra that Embracer Group did not receive any kits. Nintendo reportedly felt that Embracer’s current instability might lead to kits going missing if some of their studios shut down.

While some companies are still waiting, Ubisoft already has access to the Switch 2 dev kits. Earlier rumors even suggested that Ubisoft has more than six games in development for the new console.

Last week, reporter Tom Henderson from Insider Gaming revealed that many third-party developers won’t receive their dev kits until June. He said this is part of a three-phase launch plan.

This means third-party games could start appearing between October and November.

Another report from Insider Gaming mentioned that some Switch 2 dev kits may not support 4K output. Henderson shared that he heard this from a developer at the Game Developers Conference (GDC) and also received a separate email confirming it.”I heard this from one developer at GDC and also heard it separately in an email but the dev kits, or some of the dev kits, don’t have a 4K output.”

Even though the dev kits might not show the final product’s specs, earlier leaks suggested that the Switch 2 could have 4K upscaling. Some Nintendo patents also hint at this possibility.
