‘Fallout’ Remaster Might Be Too Hard to Make, Says Game Creator Tim Cain
Fans have been asking for a Fallout remaster, especially after the success of the Oblivion Remaster by Bethesda. Many gamers want the original Fallout game from 1997 to be updated, but one of the game’s creators, Tim Cain, says it may be too difficult.
In a 17-minute video on his YouTube channel, Tim Cain talked about why making a remaster is very hard. He explained there are many legal, technical, and even creative problems in the way.
Cain shared that when he left Interplay, the company that made Fallout, he was told to get rid of all his copies of the game’s code.
“When I left Interplay, they said, ‘You better not have any copies of this.’ I destroyed every copy of the source code I had. I went so far to destroy it that I even destroyed early prototypes and libraries, which means I can’t even get some of my older, personal ‘toy projects’ that I was working on at home to compile anymore.”
“They reference a library that I destroyed the only copy of, when I destroyed Fallout and all the early code.”
This means that Cain no longer has anything he could use to help remake the game.
But there’s still a little hope, Rebecca Heineman, one of Interplay’s founders, said she still has some pieces of Fallout’s old code saved.
Cain also talked about other major problems. He said the original music in Fallout was not licensed for remasters because back in 1997, no one expected future remakes. He explained that the in-game videos and cutscenes were made in a special format that might not work today, so these might need to be remade from scratch.
He also said that the game was built using old software and tools that no longer exist, which makes updating or fixing things very hard.
Fallout also had bugs when it first came out, and many are still in the game today. Cain said that even modders have a hard time fixing them because the code is so tricky.
Cain added that today’s players might not like the old user interface or the complex mechanics in the original Fallout. He explained that some parts of the game would need to be made simpler to fit modern tastes.
“You’re making something that’s a new game rather than just a Fallout remaster,” Cain explained.
In the end, Tim Cain made it clear that a Fallout remaster isn’t impossible, but it would be extremely challenging. It might even turn into a whole new game instead of just an updated version of the old one.
