New Japanese Indie Devs Announce ‘Rain98’ for Fall Release
Founded on April 1, 2025, C#4R4CT3R is a new indie game developer and publisher from Tokyo. This Japanese studio aims to enter the indie market with games that contain “unique characters, unusual personalities, and unforgettable experiences.”
Their first game is going to be released this fall and we are happy to reveal more details about what could be a mesmerizing indie hit once it comes out.
The game is going to be titled Rain98 and it will be a psychologically heavy indie title that has a lot of potential based on what we’ve seen in the material released by C#4R4CT3R for the media.
The game is going to be heavily inspired by 90’s anime Perfect Blue and Ocean Waves, both classics, for the game’s atmosphere. If you’ve seen either of these two movies, you’ll know that the atmosphere is a very specific, eerie blend of lo-fi and reality, with Perfect Blue also containing psychedelic elements.
The game itself is described as a “psychological-thriller-meets-romance adventure with the lo-fi vibes of late ‘90s Tokyo,” and that description alone looks interesting enough and makes us want to play the game.
The player will be the roommate of Reina Amahara (voiced by Rio Tsuchiya), a girl described as both “dangerously charming and charmingly dangerous.” The setting – i.e., the apartment – will be a gloomy one and you will have the task of completing a strange ritual that could save or destroy the world.
As said, the game will be launched on Steam this fall, and the devs have also confirmed that they are planning a console release, although the details have not been specified yet.
