At the Shanghai Auto Show, Mercedes-Benz revealed a brand-new car made especially for China: the CLA L. This is a longer version of the regular CLA, and it’s built to offer more space and comfort for Chinese customers.

The new CLA L is 187.5 inches (4,763 mm) long and has a wheelbase of 112.8 inches (2,865 mm). That means it’s 1.6 inches (40 mm) longer than the regular model — and it’s even longer than the current C-Class. The longer wheelbase means more room for people, especially in the back seats.

Mercedes made some special changes to the back seats. The rear seat cushion is 0.4 inches (10 mm) longer, which helps support your legs better. The side bolsters on the rear seats are also softer, which means they’re more comfortable for longer rides.

Inside, the CLA L includes a 10.25-inch digital instrument screen, a 14-inch main touchscreen, and a 14-inch passenger screen. All these run a special version of MB.OS, Mercedes’ new software system.

For the Chinese market, the car uses local voice features and includes the DouBao AI assistant by ByteDance. It also comes with China-specific maps and navigation tools.

Mercedes didn’t share every detail yet, but this version is an electric car. It has a rear motor that makes 268 horsepower (200 kW / 272 PS). The battery uses 800-volt technology and can drive up to 538 miles (866 km) on a single charge (based on China’s CLTC test cycle).

When the battery is low, a 320 kW fast charger can add 230 miles (370 km) of range in just 10 minutes.

Mercedes says the CLA L is “the most efficient car in its segment”, with 93% of battery energy making it to the wheels. In one test, a prototype drove 665 miles (1,071 km) on a full charge while using only 8.26 kWh per 100 km at a steady speed.
