Instagram Brings Reels to the Big Screen
The popular social media platform is expanding its reach beyond mobile devices by launching a dedicated application for televisions. This new move allows users to watch short-form vertical videos from the comfort of their living rooms.
Instagram has started testing this feature on Amazon Fire TV devices in the United States. The company plans to eventually roll out the application to other smart TV platforms, such as those from Samsung and LG.
The interface is specifically designed for larger screens and works seamlessly with a standard remote control. Instead of the usual infinite scroll found on phones, content is organized into channels based on specific interests like comedy, travel, and animals.
Vertical videos will be displayed in the center of the screen, likely with blurred backgrounds or black bars to fill the remaining horizontal space. This format attempts to adapt the mobile-first experience for a traditional home theater setup.
Users can log in to their accounts using a QR code displayed on the TV. The app also supports multiple profiles, making it easier for different household members to access their own personalized feeds.
This strategic update places Instagram in direct competition with TikTok and YouTube, both of which already have established TV applications. As viewing habits shift, social networks are fighting for attention on every available screen in the home.
