The usage of AI is growing and while there are legitimate concerns over its use in the future, companies are nevertheless investing a lot of funds into AI and are training new and better models. We can debate the usefulness of such endeavors, but the fact is that they are happening.

Apple has recently revealed a change in how it is going to train its future AI models, which has been published as part of the updated Image Collection website details, which feature a new paragraph on how images will be used to train the Apple Maps’ Look Around feature.

As it seems based on the new paragraph, Apple is going to use pre-collected photos from old surveys to train its new models to generate better and more realistic maps for the Look Around feature. This is the text in question:

In addition to improving Apple Maps and the algorithms that blur faces and license plates in images published in Look Around feature, Apple also will use blurred imagery collected during surveys conducted beginning in March 2025 to develop and improve other Apple products and services. This includes using data to train models powering Apple products and services, including models related to image recognition, creation, and enhancement.

Apple promises to protect the privacy of its users and those who participated in the survey, as well as all those who were caught in the images in question. Privacy-related details will be blurred out, so there should be no worries for the users.
