OpenAI has officially executed a major strategic shift by launching an App Directory and opening its Software Development Kit to the public. This move effectively transforms the popular AI service from a simple chatbot into a comprehensive software platform. Developers are now empowered to build unique, interactive experiences that function directly within the user interface.

This development aligns with recent comments from CEO Sam Altman, who hinted at adding robust platform features to the service. By allowing external applications to integrate deeply, the company is taking a significant step toward making its AI a central hub for digital tasks. The transition includes a simplification of terminology, where previous “connectors” are now officially rebranded as “apps.”

Under this new system, tools that previously pulled data from services like Google Drive are now categorized more clearly. For example, chat connectors have been renamed to “file search apps,” while other categories include “deep research apps” and “synced apps.” These changes aim to make the ecosystem more intuitive for both developers and everyday users.

Privacy remains a key component of this update, as these applications can utilize information from the chatbot’s memory feature if the user allows it. It is important to note that data from these interactions may be used to train models for users on Free, Plus, Go, and Pro plans, depending on their personal settings.

The update also brings exciting new integrations for music lovers. A completely new Apple Music integration allows subscribers to search for songs, manage their libraries, and create playlists entirely through conversation. Additionally, the existing Spotify integration has been expanded to support more regions, including the United Kingdom and Switzerland.

Do you think this transition to a full app platform will make the AI tool more useful for your daily tasks? let us know what you think in the comments.
