Yoko Taro, the director of Nier: Automata, believes that artificial intelligence (AI) will take over game development in the future. In a new interview with Famitsu, he shared his thoughts on how AI could change the gaming industry.

I also think that all game creators will lose their jobs due to AI,” Taro said. “In 50 years, game creators may be treated like bards.”

He explained that people will no longer need to copy their favorite creators. Instead, AI will make it easy to create stories and games that match each person’s taste.

Eventually, I think we will change from an era where people imitate the style of their favorite creators to an era where they can generate their favorite scenarios,” he continued. “AI judges the user’s preferences and successfully generates route branches that the person wants to read, and the ability of recommendations is developing more and more.”

Taro isn’t the only game developer talking about AI. Daniel Vávra, co-founder of Warhorse Studios, also said he hopes AI can help him make more games before he leaves the industry.

As AI technology keeps improving, more game creators are starting to think about how it will shape the future of games.
