Borderlands 4 is coming out on September 12, 2025, as has been confirmed recently. The hype surrounding the game is real and after the movie flopped, everyone just wants to forget about the disaster with a new awesome game.

The whole history of the Borderlands franchise is a history of chance successes, as no one really expected that the game would do as great as it did. But when the first game overperformed, and the second did even better, the developers decided to make good use of that fact.

The third game was solid, but it wasn’t as big as the first two in comparison, so the devs are once again hoping that Borderlands 4 will mimic the success of the first two games. This is why the new game will feature a lot of new elements, including the revamped co-op mode.

As you probably know, the last main Borderlands game was released back in 2019. The developers had enough time to come up with a great story and develop it properly, while the fans have been waiting too long for a new mainline game.

And while we don’t know much about the story, we do know that Borderlands 4 will introduce some new concepts, as well as upgrade the already-existing ones; this will be the first Borderlands game developed for the current-gen consoles, as older titles were developed for previous generations.

One of the aspects that is going to get a revamp is the co-op mode, which will bring something new, as the developers revealed:

  • dynamically-scaled difficulty for each player
  • completely revamped lobby system
  • drop-in and drop-out co-op
  • fast-travel to friends

What sounds most intriguing is the “drop” mode, which will, according to the developers, mean that a player won’t have to “play for three hours and then you can start co-op. No, just get in, people can drop in and drop out.”

The information was confirmed at the PAX East 2025 panel, and you can watch the whole event here:
