Xiaomi’s Electric Cars Surge Ahead, Outshining Expectations
BYD may be grabbing headlines, but it’s not the only Chinese automaker shaking up the electric vehicle (EV) market. Xiaomi, known for its electronics, has quickly made a name for itself in the automotive industry.
In 2024, with just one car in its lineup, Xiaomi managed to exceed its sales goals and is now aiming even higher in 2025, AutoBlog reports.
Xiaomi first entered the EV world with the launch of the SU7 in late 2023. The debut was nothing short of spectacular, as the company received over 50,000 orders within half an hour. Initially, Xiaomi set a modest target of 60,000 units for 2024, but it soon became clear that demand far outstripped supply.
After the SU7 officially launched in March 2024, Xiaomi ramped up production, manufacturing 10,000 units in just a month. By November, the company had sold over 100,000 units, with the final tally for the year surpassing 135,000. This was more than double the original goal, achieved in just nine months.
With such a successful year behind them, Xiaomi is now setting its sights on an ambitious new target for 2025: selling 300,000 vehicles. This is a huge leap, but Xiaomi plans to meet this challenge by expanding its manufacturing capacity. By mid-2025, the second phase of their production facility will come online, significantly boosting output.
The Xiaomi SU7, available in Standard and Max trims, offers impressive range options of 435 and 503 miles, respectively. The Max version features a powerful 101 kWh battery. Building on this success, Xiaomi is introducing the YU7 SUV later this year, aiming to compete directly with the Tesla Model Y in China.
Details about the YU7 are still sparse, but it’s known to have a 5,302-pound weight and a 118-inch wheelbase. It will use a Lithium-ion ternary battery from CATL, though specifics like range and performance are yet to be revealed.
As Xiaomi expands its lineup and production capacity, it’s clear the company is serious about becoming a major player in the global auto industry. CEO Lei Jun has even stated that Xiaomi aims to be among the world’s top five automakers.
With such momentum, Xiaomi is well-positioned to reach its goal of 300,000 sales in 2025. The addition of the YU7 SUV is expected to attract even more buyers, helping Xiaomi strengthen its foothold in the EV market. As the year progresses, all eyes will be on Xiaomi to see if it can continue to defy expectations and achieve its lofty ambitions.
