Since Sony decided to take the gaming world by storm with its PlayStation gaming console series, Microsoft also decided to break into the market to become a notable competitor in the video game console industry. Microsoft went on to create Xbox, a video gaming brand with five gaming consoles of the present designed for home entertainment.
When PlayStation announced the PlayStation 2 in 1995 as a home entertainment device since it won’t only be used to play games but will be used to play CDs and video DVDs, Microsoft saw this as a threat to the PC market and decided to launch the Xbox gaming consoles
Xbox Series X is the latest Xbox gaming console that’s posed a considerable threat to PlayStation’s ps5 in terms of sales. In this article, I’ll discuss the Xbox Series X statistics and numbers in 2022.
When Was Xbox Series X released?
The official release date for the Xbox Series X was on November 10, 2020, as the fourth generation of the Xbox console family succeeded the Xbox One and became a part of the ninth generation of video game consoles alongside the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S.
Microsoft planned the release of the Xbox Series X with the Xbox Series S to be released on the same day, both consoles were released on November 10th, 2020. This is because Microsoft was satisfied with the two-console release approach done for the Xbox One and went on to plan a similar approach for the Xbox Series X and the Xbox Series S.
Rumors about the consoles first emerged in early 2019, with the line as a whole being codenamed “Scarlett” and consisting of two other high-end and low-end models also codenamed “Anaconda” and “Lockhart” respectively. Since Microsoft loved the approach for the launch of the Xbox One, they planned a similar approach for the fourth generation Xbox, with the target for the “Anaconda” model to at least double the performance of the Xbox One X.
The high-end model for the project was first teased during the third quarter of 2019, under the title “Project Scarlett”, while its name and design were further released at The Game Awards to be the Xbox Series X in December and the lower-end model was unveiled in September 2020 as the Xbox Series S.
The Xbox Series X possesses high-end hardware and supports higher display resolutions of up to 8K resolution, with higher frame rates and real-time ray tracing. The console also has a high-speed SSD which was used in its design to reduce gaming load times. In addition, the Xbox Series X, along with the Series S was designed to support all Xbox One games so if you have an Xbox One, you can migrate the games to your Xbox Series X console and play your games on it.
During the console’s launch, Microsoft placed its first-party games and various third-party games to be available for both the Xbox Series X and Xbox One to provide users with smooth transitioning between both generations of the consoles. In addition, this process provides the “Smart Delivery” distribution framework to easily provide further optimizations of an Xbox One game for the Xbox Series X.
How Many People Have An Xbox Series X?
In terms of sales, as of January 2022, the Xbox Series X/S was reported by Microsoft to have sold over 12 million units worldwide. This means that presently, over 12 million people at least, own an Xbox Series X. Geographically, the console was reported to have sold 6.52 million units in North America, 3.79 million units in Europe, 140,000 units in Japan, and 1.9 million units in the rest of the world.
Since we don’t have proper analytics on every user that owns an Xbox Series X, we’ll be referring to this subject in terms of the latest sales statistics released by Microsoft. In other words, this means, potentially, there are 6.52 million Xbox Series X owners in North America, 3.79 million Xbox Series X owners in Europe, 140,000 Xbox Series X users in Japan, and 1.9 million Xbox Series X owners in the rest of the world.
Although Playstation still holds the record of the best-selling console of the last generation, The PS2, and currently owns the record for the top-selling gaming console in this generation, The Ps4, the Xbox Series X is anticipated to break this record in the nearest fiscal years. This means that we may see an influx in the number of people buying the Xbox Series X leading to an expansion in the community of owners of the console.
Since Microsoft makes it obvious that they aren’t bothered about the hardware sales and how many owners own the Xbox Series X console, they seem to be more focused on Game Pass, Software, and creating a kind of entertainment in the “metaverse”. Comparing the present owners of the Xbox Series X with the precious console released by Microsoft, the Xbox One, we’ve seen an increase in the number of owners in the community.
How Many Xbox Series X Has Been Sold?
According to the statistics released by Microsoft in January 2022, the Xbox Series X/S has sold an estimated over 12 million units worldwide. The statistics report that the console sold 6.52 million units in North America, 3.79 million units in Europe, 140,000 units in Japan, and 1.9 million units in the rest of the world leading to a total of over 12 million units sold worldwide.
Based on estimates, the Xbox Series X/S sold 3.5 million+ units within its first one and a half months of release, meaning between November 2020 to the end of December 2020, the console sold an estimated over 3.5 million units.
In June 2021, the number of consoles sold was estimated to be around 6.5 million units which within the same timeframe, the Xbox One had sold a total of 5.7 million units, and the Xbox 360 had sold 5 million units. By October 2021, the Xbox Series X had sold a total of 8 million units. In 2021, the Xbox Series X was said to have generated 43% of all the Xbox Series Sold within the year in the United Kingdom.
20,534 units of the console were sold in Japan during the launch week and by November 2021, the Series X/S finally crossed the 116,000 units sold threshold per month, creating a new record for the highest amount of Xbox consoles sold per month, with the Xbox Series X being sold in high demand.
At the end of January 2022, the demand for the console increased which led to a total monthly sale of 136,034 units of the console. The Xbox Series X still has the potential to have a higher amount of sales monthly in regions all over the world. Microsoft, in 2014, stopped sharing its sales numbers because they want the public to see that the number of sales of each Xbox console doesn’t define its brand and its quality.
However, expert analysts still make sure to keep track of the information and share it with the public to help users understand what’s happening within the Xbox sales team. The Xbox Series X has been a success since its launch with record-breaking sales monthly, the console is still going strong and still has a lot of high demand to satisfy.
Xbox One vs Xbox Series X Sales Comparison
November 2021 makes it the 13th month that the Xbox Series X has been released. In the latest month, according to VGChartz, the gap grew between the Xbox One and the Xbox Series X with the gap by 571,308 units in favor of the Xbox One when compared to the launch of the Xbox Series X.
In the last 12 months, the Xbox Series X has grown its lead by 1.32 million units while the console in recent months, is currently ahead of the Xbox One by 1.46 million units sold.
Comparing both console’s 13th-month sales, the Xbox Series X is recorded to have sold 9.84 million units in November 2021 since this is the console’s 13th month since launch, and Xbox One sold a total of 8.38 million units in its 13th month in November 2014 since this is its 13th month after launch.
The Xbox Series X saw a sale of over 1 million units more than that of the Xbox One. The Xbox Series X has been a successful product for Microsoft as it’s become the most sold console after launch as compared to older generations of the console. A lot more numbers are expected from the sales of the console so, in the future months of the fiscal year, we may see an increase in the sales of consoles compared to the Xbox One.
Xbox Series X vs Other Xbox Consoles
When comparing the Xbox Series X To other Xbox consoles, the console has been doing great in terms of sales but the more selling Xbox console in this generation, which is the Xbox One, has laid down a threshold for the Xbox Series X to reach.
Comparing both consoles with their 13th-month sales, the Xbox Series X has more edge as it beats the Xbox One with a gap of 1 million units sold. This shows that the console is still going strong and has more potential to be Xbox’s best-selling console of this generation.
Since the release of the Xbox Series X, Xbox’s earnings have soared to $16.28 billion last year which represents an increase of 17.07% of the company’s earnings. The first year of release of the Xbox Series X was recorded as the best calendar year on record, beating the previous high of 2020.
Other Xbox consoles have been doing averagely good in terms of sales but when Xbox Series X launched, they all saw a decrease in sales as people went for the console more than the rest. In addition, the Xbox Series X has made the highest number of sales on launch day, compared to other Xbox consoles.
Does The Xbox Series X Have A Lot Of Problems?
Just like any newly launched console, the Xbox Series X doesn’t come without its issues. Although there were reports about Microsoft’s new consoles smoking which painted them in a poor light, the Xbox Series X has had a surprisingly successful launch. Still, the console has its issues. Let’s look at the problems you may encounter with the Xbox Series X:
Discs Getting Stuck In The Disc Drive
It was reported that some early Xbox Series X units had a disc drive problem. This issue created a lot of concern as the disc was seen getting stuck halfway in the disc drive, most times accompanied by a loud clicking sound or grinding noise.
According to technicians, the problem here is the disc drive itself, not with the disc being inserted into the drive and getting stuck. To fix this, it’s recommended that you get in touch with Microsoft for a repair or replacement using their contacts. Although the issue isn’t complex, it’s still important to get it fixed, or else you won’t be able to enjoy the console.
An early Reddit thread shows multiple Xbox Series X users experiencing the same issue, which they suggested the issue is related to the dust cover that protects the disc drive. The users reported that a little push with the pain of your hand is usually enough to loosen the cover and allow the disc to freely slide in.
No videos of this fix have been seen to refer to it as a working fix, however, you can give it a try whenever you experience this or reach out to Microsoft’s support for a repair or a replacement.
Clicking Sound From Disc Drive Or Fan
Although discs getting stuck is the main issue the Xbox Series X owners are experiencing, there have also been reports about clicking sounds from the disc drive or the fan. They report that the sound comes from the console after inserting a disc or while installing a video game.
If the clicking sound is coming from your disc drive, there is a potential solution. The reason for the clicking sound may be caused by some discs when they’re being loaded. Try to test this problem by inserting your disc into another Xbox console and see if it reads. If the disc works on the other console, then your other Xbox Series X disc drive is faulty and you may need to contact Microsoft’s support for repair or replacement.
If the sound is coming from your console’s vent, then there may be some bad news. According to a Reddit user, after experiencing the clicking sound from the vent, he opened the box and found a cable hanging in the middle of the fan which caused the clicking sound when the fan started to spin.
It’s not recommended that you open your box yourself if you’re not an expert so you will need to contact Microsoft for a repair or a replacement. This is because if you open your box yourself, it will void your warranty so reach out to Microsoft to get this fixed or replaced for you.
Discs Won’t Play At All
Some early Xbox Series X units were reported to not recognize discs at all. This issue was peculiar to all discs inserted as it didn’t matter if it was Blu-ray, Xbox One games, or DVDs. If you experience troubles with a particular disc not playing, I recommend you clean it with a damp microfiber cloth, let it dry, then insert it into your Xbox Series X console.
If the disc in question is a Microsoft-published game, you may be able to exchange it for another game under the Xbox game disc exchange program.
If your console won’t recognize a disc, or requests you to insert a disc when there’s a disc already inserted in the console, there are two possible problems you may be facing. It’s either you have a problem with your power mode, which is a known problem by Microsoft to have affected quite a number of consoles, or there’s a problem with your disc drive.
You can solve the power mode issue yourself by changing your power mode or performing a hard reset and if these two methods do not work, make sure to contact Microsoft support for solutions.
Xbox Series X Won’t Turn On
If your console won’t come on, there’s probably an issue with the internal power circuit. Microsoft indicates that this may be a result of a power surge where the power supply will reset itself. You can troubleshoot this problem by yourself before contacting Microsoft support if the issue isn’t resolved by troubleshooting.
Before you reset your power supply, the first troubleshooting step you should take is to make sure that the outlet the console is plugged into works by plugging another device into it to test it.
If it does, you can perform an internal power supply reset on your console by removing the cord of the Xbox Series X for 10 seconds, then plugging it back in. If this doesn’t work, then change the power cord of your Xbox and try a new one. If these above steps do not work, you’ll need to contact Microsoft’s support.
Games Not Launching With 0x800708ca or Similar Error
Your Xbox Series X May experience this error: “Something went wrong. 0x800708ca” when you’re launching certain games. This error pops up when you’re launching some Xbox One games on your Xbox Series X and they haven’t been upgraded to the Xbox Series X version.
Microsoft hasn’t addressed this issue as they plan to in the future with a possible update on the Xbox Series X. But to help you bypass this bug, Microsoft recommends that you reset your console and upgrade the games to the series X version.
Smart Delivery Games Won’t Install or Have Graphical Issues
The smart delivery game feature allows users to get the newest version of cross-generational games. This means if you have a particular game on your Xbox One, you can get the series x version of the game for free. This feature doesn’t come with its problem, however, some smart delivery titles won’t recognize that installation has finished and may launch with graphical issues.
Microsoft says that this issue happens when Xbox One games are brought over to the Xbox Series X on an external hard drive. There isn’t a particular list of affected games so if you’ve installed a game from Xbox One via an external hard drive, you may encounter this issue.
Unfortunately, Microsoft doesn’t have an official solution to this problem presently but plans to create an update in the future that addresses this issue.
There are some other issues that you may face on your Xbox Series X console, so if you ever face them, make sure to contact Microsoft support if you don’t seem to have a solution to it. You can also try to troubleshoot first but do not open your box so you won’t void your warranty.
Xbox Series X Average Selling Price
The console’s average selling price according to Best Buy is $499.99 in the US. In the UK, the average selling price is £449.99. If the price is higher than these said prices without any extra gadgets added to the sale, then you’re being overcharged by the retailer.
Some stores take advantage of this in many ways from selling limited sellable stock to bundles with extra games or headsets. The fact is if you’re patronizing these stores, then you’re not saving any dime on these bundles.
Xbox Series X Guinness Record
In honor of the launch of the Xbox Series X, Xbox decided to take a record-breaking step to display the game over the sides of Copper Mountain, Colorado. This feat hit the Guinness world record books to be the largest projected video game display
This was done to showcase the game’s display specifications. The video game was projected onto a 180x105ft widescreen on the side of Copper Mountain with the skyline of the 10-mile mountain range of Colorado lit up in the background of the game.
Male vs Female Xbox Series X Statistics
According to a survey run on 2000 Xbox Series X owners in the United States, it was recorded that the split in ownership between both genders was 42% Females and 58% males. Although over the years, we’ve seen an increase in the amount of female video game players, there was an exponential rise between 2019 and 2022.
A lot of women have now taken interest in gaming both consumption and development and analytics show that in coming years, we may see an increase in the figures of female owners of Xbox consoles.
However, it’s great to see that the gaming industry isn’t male-dominated anymore and we can have a lot more females explore the industry with the launch of the metaverse and the web 3 on Xbox consoles.
Xbox Series X Active Users
Although we don’t have the exact statistics for the number of Xbox Series X Active Users, we can deduce the proposed number of users from the amount of monthly active users on Xbox Live.
