What Are The Different Categories of Internet Protocols

Today the Internet is available in almost every home. And the IP address is known as the backbone of the internet. It gives a location for every device to connect to and share information. IP is a means of communication between devices. Most internet users consider it unimportant. But if you look closely, it is the passport of all your internet-related things. It not only helps devices communicate with each other, but you can also find people using their IPs. It is also beneficial in a business where you can contact other merchants with their IP addresses using the WHOIS IP Lookup tool.

If you want to know more about IP Addresses and their types, keep reading the article.

What is an IP Address?

The IP address stands for Internet Protocol Address. It is a unique string of numbers with separate periods used to identify a device. The internet differentiates between different devices, routers, and computers with different allocated IP addresses. Hence, it is a means of communication between devices. It is divided into four sets, each ranging between 0 to 255. The strings are not chosen randomly but mathematically allocated by ICANN. It means no device can have the same IP address when connected to a network. The ICANN has both the Registrant and Registrar information of the IP address. It can be found on IP WHOIS Lookup tools. Hence, the user can check to whom a specific IP address belongs. It also provides their contact, autonomous system (AS) number, regional internet registry (RIR), and geolocation information.

Types of IP Address

The IP address has four main categories. Each IP address is for a different type of usage:

Consumer IP Address

They are the IP Address of individual IP users. They are categorized into two primary types of IP addresses. Private IP address and Public IP Address. The private IP address is used within a network, while the public IP address can also be available outside a network.

Public IP Address

This IP address identifies a specific user network. Although each connected router has its IP address, collectively, they are included in the main IP address. Hence, they are identified with their IP address by other devices. Usually, the IP address is allocated by ISPs which keep track of it by ICANN.

Private IP Address

Every smart device with an internet connection has an IP address. As the IoT is increasing, the number of private IP addresses has also increased. The router generates a specific IP address for each connected item. It helps it to recognize devices and provides better bandwidth.

Dynamic IP Address

The dynamic IP address is the one that changes automatically and regularly. The ISPs buy a lot of IP addresses which are later assigned to different users. It is a money-saving method. When the old IP is returned to ISP, it is later provided to a network. Hence, the user doesn’t have to carry the same IP address wherever he moves. Moreover, this also saves your IP address from intruders. They are also cheap and don’t require any operational skills.

Static IP Address

Unlike the Dynamic IP address, the Static IP address remains consistent. It means that the IP address remains the same. Usually, the businessman doesn’t prefer a Static IP address. However, those businesses plan to have their server get a Static IP connection. They are relatively expensive and change only when the architecture of the network changes. It ensures that all the networks and emails have a consistent IP address. It is essential when you want to make yourself available on the web. Other users can find you using WHOIS IP Lookup.

How To Find IP Address Information?

If you want to know the name or geolocation of an IP owner, then you can search for it using the WHOIS IP Lookup tool, such as https://dnschecker.org/ip-whois-lookup.php. WHOIS refers to ‘Who Is Responsible For.’ This tool gives information about the allocated IP owner. It gives you information about the assigned IP and the new owner of the IP. Users can also check  IP abuse or IP spamming using the WHOIS Lookup tool. Not only your IP address, but you can also check others’ registration information if you have their IP address.

Conclusion

The IP Address information is stored by Internet Corporation For Assigned Names And Numbers (ICANN). They then provide a specific IP address to Regional Internet Registrations. It is later assigned to a different IP registrant. Before registering for an IP address, the user has to provide a domain name, contact, and location information to the registrar. This information is stored by ICANN, and it can be searched using the IP WHOIS Lookup tool.
