In a recent demonstration of advanced military technology, the Israeli Navy, together with the Directorate of Defence Research & Development (DDR&D) and Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), successfully conducted an operational test of the Gabriel 5 sea-to-sea missile.

This test, part of ongoing efforts to enhance Israel’s naval capabilities, focused on simulating real-life combat scenarios to evaluate the missile’s performance.

According to Capt. A., Head of the Weapons Department in the Israeli Navy, the test not only showcased the missile’s precision and reliability but also reflected the high level of professionalism among the Israeli Navy soldiers.

‘The capabilities we tested and proved in this test are already being applied in combat across all arenas, providing our forces with a substantial operational advantage,’ he noted.

Boaz Levy, CEO of Israel Aerospace Industries, expressed pride in the company’s role in developing the Gabriel 5, which he described as ‘the most advanced naval strike system of its kind in the world.’

He added, ‘The missile was launched precisely as required, followed its expected trajectory, and successfully hit the target exactly where and when we intended.’

The Gabriel missile system has a long history of development, first introduced by IAI in the mid-1960s. Since its inception, the missile has undergone several upgrades, with over 1,000 units sold to the Israel MoD and various other countries.

In 2018, the Finnish Navy selected the Gabriel missile for its new surface-to-surface missile system, SSM2020, which will be installed on Hamina-class and Squadron 2020 class vessels as well as on a vehicle platform.

The recent completion of the hull of the first Squadron 2020 (Pohjanmaa-class) multi-role corvette marks another milestone.

Constructed by Rauma Marine Constructions and its subsidiary RMC Defence, these corvettes are designed to perform in the challenging conditions of the Baltic Sea, from stormy autumns to freezing winters.

This successful missile test represents a key enhancement of the Israeli Navy’s offensive capabilities, ensuring Israel maintains its maritime superiority in the region.
