UK Government Launches AI Trials in Bakeries, Farms, and Beyond
The UK Government has unveiled an ambitious initiative within its AI Opportunities Plan. A total of £7 million in funding will be distributed among 120 projects, sparking a significant push towards incorporating artificial intelligence across various sectors.
Peter Kyle, the Science and Technology Secretary, expressed enthusiasm about the potential impact of these initiatives.
“The huge range of projects receiving funding today, from farmers and bakers to those tackling potholes on our roads and mould in residential properties, demonstrates the truly limitless benefits of AI that are there for the taking,” he stated.
Among the innovative projects is an algorithm designed to help bakeries more accurately predict their sales, potentially reducing food waste by ensuring just the right amount of product is made.
Another notable project aims to use AI to foresee the formation of potholes, allowing for more cost-effective and preemptive repairs. There are also plans to develop AI models that could enhance dairy production on farms.
This funding comes after the cancellation of a much larger £1.3 billion AI investment plan, which included a proposed £800 million for an Exascale supercomputer and £500 million for enhancing computing power for AI research.
Despite the reduced scale, the £7 million investment is seen as a crucial step towards revitalizing the nation’s small businesses and reinforcing the UK’s status as a top destination for AI enterprises in Europe.
“We will seize these opportunities with our 50-point AI Opportunities Plan, aiming for a decade of national renewal and igniting our Plan for Change,” Kyle added, underscoring the government’s commitment to integrating AI technology across the UK.
