Toyota Is Building a $10 Billion Futuristic City at Mount Fuji’s Base
Toyota has been working on an ambitious project called Woven City near Mount Fuji in Japan. This city is designed to be a ‘living laboratory’ where new technologies can be tested in real-life settings. The idea is to create a place where people, goods, and information move seamlessly, improving daily life.
Construction of Woven City began in 2021. By October 2024, the first phase was finished, covering about 50,000 square meters. This phase includes homes and facilities for the initial residents and inventors. The city is planned to grow over time, eventually covering around 708,000 square meters.
In the fall of 2025, about 100 people, mainly Toyota employees and their families, are expected to move in. These residents, known as ‘Weavers,’ will help develop and test new technologies. The population is planned to increase to about 360 during the first phase and could reach up to 2,000 as the city expands.
Woven City is designed with different types of streets: some for pedestrians, some for slow-moving vehicles, and others for faster transport. This setup aims to make transportation safe and efficient. The city will also use renewable energy sources, including hydrogen fuel cells, to power homes and facilities.
Several companies are collaborating with Toyota on this project. For example, Daikin Industries is working on creating ‘pollen-free spaces’ and personalized environments. NISSIN FOOD PRODUCTS is exploring new food cultures, and UCC Japan is looking into futuristic café experiences. These partnerships aim to bring innovative solutions to everyday challenges.
Woven City has received recognition for its environmentally friendly and human-centered design. In March 2023, it earned Japan’s first LEED for Communities Platinum certification, highlighting its commitment to sustainability and quality of life.
Toyota sees Woven City as a key part of its shift from being just a car manufacturer to becoming a broader mobility company.
By creating this city, Toyota hopes to develop and refine technologies that could be used in other urban areas worldwide, potentially changing how we live and interact with our surroundings. More information about the project can be found on Toyota’s official site.
