The EU Might Force Apple to Open its Exclusive Features for Android Phones in the Future

The European Union isn’t backing off in its efforts to make Apple open up its ecosystem. After Apple started phasing out its lightning ports in Europe, reports suggest the EU is now focusing on AirDrop and AirPlay. The new proposal wants Apple to make these features available to other platforms, likely including Android and Windows devices.

AirDrop lets Apple users send files instantly between devices wirelessly, while AirPlay allows them to stream content like videos from their phone to other devices, including TVs.

Even though Android has similar tools, like Quick Share and Google Cast, they don’t work as well across different platforms. The same goes for Apple’s services. This move could help Apple improve compatibility between its devices and others, just like the RCS messaging standard is doing for Android and iOS users.

If Apple agrees to open up AirDrop and AirPlay, we might finally see better interoperability between iPhones and Android phones, and possibly even Windows PCs.

These changes could allow for more seamless sharing and streaming across different ecosystems. However, we’re likely to see Apple push back, as the company tends to be protective over its services and technologies.

Up to now, though, Apple has been forced to comply with some EU demands, like adopting RCS support, allowing alternative app stores, and even enabling video game emulators on its platform. These are all signs that the EU is serious about making Apple open up its ecosystem and increasing competition in the tech space.

Still, it won’t be easy for Apple to give in. The company has a history of resisting any changes that could harm its tight control over its products and services. But as the EU continues to press for more openness, Apple may have no choice but to adapt, whether it wants to or not.
