Temu Dethrones TikTok to Become the Most Downloaded App in the U.S. for 2024
In a surprising twist, Temu, a Chinese shopping app, has claimed the title of the most downloaded free app in the U.S. for the second year in a row. This move pushed TikTok down to third place, as Meta’s Instagram Threads took the second spot.
The list released by Apple showcases the apps that users are actually installing on their devices.
Apple’s year-end list also featured ChatGPT as the fourth-most downloaded app, surpassing Google’s Search app, which is a notable shift from the previous year when ChatGPT did not make the top 10. This shows a growing interest in AI-powered applications.
Despite Temu’s dominance, Meta’s apps remain popular but have seen a slight decline in rankings over recent years. For example, Instagram and WhatsApp ranked sixth and seventh, respectively. Following them were CapCut, YouTube, Gmail, Google Maps, Shein, and Facebook, which landed at number 13.
Other apps like Telegram, Snapchat, Cash App, Spotify, Max, McDonald’s, and Amazon rounded out the top 20 list for most downloaded apps in the U.S.
Apple also shared the top games of the year, with Block Blast! leading as the most downloaded free game. Monopoly Go! and Roblox were also highly popular, followed by Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile and Township. The top Apple Arcade title was NBA 2K24 Arcade Edition.
This ranking reflects the changing preferences and interests of app users in the U.S., signaling a shift towards new platforms and technologies in 2024.
