Paul Schrader, known for writing Taxi Driver and directing First Reformed, recently shared his thoughts on using ChatGPT for film ideas. In a Facebook post, Schrader mentioned asking the AI to come up with movie plots for various filmmakers, including himself, and was blown away by the results.

Schrader wrote: “I’M STUNNED. I just asked chatgpt for “an idea for Paul Schrader film.” Then Paul Thomas Anderson. Then Quentin Tarantino. Then Harmony Korine. Then Ingmar Bergman. Then Rossellini. Lang. Scorsese. Murnau. Capra. Ford. Speilberg. Lynch. Every idea chatgpt came up with (in a few seconds) was good. And original. And fleshed out. Why should writers sit around for months searching for a good idea when AI can provide one in seconds?

According to Schrader, every idea ChatGPT generated was not only original but also well-developed. He questioned why writers should spend months searching for ideas when AI can produce good ones in seconds.

The post sparked backlash, with many of Schrader’s followers expressing concern. Comments ranged from ‘Paul, is everything ok?’ to ‘Jesus Paul… stop promoting that.’ Despite this, Schrader has been openly discussing AI on his page, calling it smarter than himself and praising its efficiency in improving his old scripts.

Schrader’s upcoming movie, Oh, Canada, features Richard Gere and Jacob Elordi and explores the reflections of a dying filmmaker. At the Cannes Film Festival, he revealed his next project will be Non Compos Mentis, a noir about ‘the stupid things men do for love.’
