The gaming world has been buzzing about Nintendo’s new console, the Switch 2, and its impact is already being felt. Released back in 2017, the original Nintendo Switch became a favorite for its ability to run games both on the go and on a bigger screen.

But with tech moving so quickly, the Switch started falling behind on newer, more demanding games. Enter the Steam Deck, which filled that gap with its powerful hardware, capable of handling games like God of War: Ragnarok.

Recently, though, the Steam Deck’s popularity has taken a hit. According to Steam Charts (via Twisted Voxel), its ranking dropped from #3 to #47 between January 14 and January 21, 2025 (they have since recovered, but it’s been a while since the reveal). That’s a big change for a device that usually stays in the top 10.

The only major event during that time was Nintendo’s announcement of the Switch 2. While it’s not confirmed, the timing makes it seem like the buzz around the new console is pulling attention away from the Steam Deck.

Nintendo hasn’t shared many details about the Switch 2, but a trailer has given us some hints. The new console will be bigger and pack more power than the first. One exciting feature is the updated Joy-Cons, which now snap on magnetically instead of sliding into place.

The trailer also shows they might work like a mouse, which could mean new ways to play games.

The hype makes sense—Nintendo announced last year that the original Switch had sold 143 million units worldwide by August 2024. With numbers like that, it’s clear the Switch 2 has a strong fan base already waiting. It’s set to release sometime in 2025, and many are expecting more details in the next Nintendo Direct on April 2.
