Subaru Forester Is Going Green in 2025 Thanks to a Unique Hybrid Setup

Subaru is setting the pace with its latest hybrid technology, introducing electrified versions of its popular models, the 2025 Forester and the Crosstrek.

This marks a first for the Forester in North America, bringing a fresh option to eco-conscious drivers, while the Crosstrek continues its legacy with a new hybrid variant, building on its 2024 generation update.

Diving into the details, the Crosstrek Hybrid’s tech is well-known, featuring a 1.1-kilowatt-hour battery and two electric motors.

Although specifics for the Forester Hybrid are still under wraps, it’s likely to adopt this setup.

The motors, with a combined output of 118 horsepower, work with a new transaxle supporting a traditional Subaru 2.5-liter flat-four engine.

This ‘series-parallel’ powertrain shifts between using the engine and the electric motor based on driving conditions, promising a smooth ride.

Fuel efficiency is already a strong suit for these models. The standard 2025 Forester enjoys an EPA rating of 26 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway.

The Crosstrek edges this out slightly in urban settings and maintains the highway efficiency.

The upcoming hybrids could push these figures over 40 mpg, setting a new standard for Subaru’s utility vehicles.

Pricing details are still on the horizon, but shoppers should anticipate a premium over the non-hybrid versions.

Camouflaged prototypes of the Forester Hybrid have been seen in testing. From the looks of these prototypes, the electrified crossover seems nearly identical to its standard counterpart, with the possible exception of unique badges.

The history of the Crosstrek’s hybrid versions—from a straightforward hybrid to a more advanced plug-in—suggests Subaru is refining its approach to meet driver needs.

As hybrids often occupy higher trims in models like the Honda CR-V and the Civic, it remains to be seen how Subaru will integrate this tech across its offerings.

We’re eager to see these hybrids hit the roads, which should be sometime during the 2025 model year.

With potential for increased fuel efficiency and an appealing price point, the Subaru Forester Hybrid and Crosstrek Hybrid are gearing up to be a top pick for those looking to drive greener.
