Study Shows That an Hourly Screen Time Rise Increases Risk of Myopia

The number of children and young people suffering from myopia (nearsightedness) is growing fast, and experts predict that by 2050, it will affect around 740 million people worldwide. One of the factors believed to be contributing to this rise is increased screen time.
A study published in the JAMA journal analyzed over 45 studies and found a clear link between screen use and higher chances of developing myopia. The research showed that each additional hour of screen time increases the risk by 21%. For people who spend 1 to 4 hours a day on screens, the risk of myopia rises sharply, while the increase becomes more gradual after that.
Interestingly, the study also showed that the risk is even higher when screen time involves multiple devices like smartphones, computers, and TVs. Children and adults across different age groups are all impacted. However, the risks level off after about four hours of screen use each day.
Experts point out that just cutting back on screen time might not be enough to stop myopia from developing. They suggest a better approach is to reduce screen time and spend more time outdoors. This combination seems to be the most effective strategy, although it’s still being researched.
Other methods, like using special lenses or undergoing refractive surgery, can help manage myopia but aren’t a complete solution. The most promising treatment so far is the use of atropine eye drops, which have been shown to be effective in slowing the progression of myopia.
While we can’t completely pin the blame on screen use for the rise in myopia, there is a clear connection. Lifestyle and genetics also play a role, but reducing screen time and spending more time outside might be one of the easiest ways to protect our eyes.
If you’re worried about myopia, it’s best to consult a healthcare professional to find the right solution for your eye health.
