Sony Is Now Exploring the Possibility of AI-Powered Video Game Characters

Artificial intelligence is undoubtedly growing and with the possibilities it is offering, people are predicting that it will soon be available and usable in more and more fields of our everyday lives. And while we’re still some time before AI becomes fully functional, companies are experimenting with it more and more.

Sony is the latest company to explore this possibility, as a video of an experiment with an AI-powered game character appeared recently. The character in question is Aloy from the Horizon series, and while the video has been taken down in the meantime, traces of it are left.

The video did not reveal much in terms of tje background of the idea, but it did show us an AI-powered Aloy that looked both realistic and strange at the same time. As said, the video has since been removed, courtesy of a request by Muso, a copyrights enforcement company which advertises Sony Interactive Entertainment (aka PlayStation) as a client, but here is what it looked like (unfortunately, no sound):

The video was initially shared anonymously by a tipster from the inside, which goes to show that Sony did not plan for this video or information to leak out, which is why it was quickly removed.

Aside from Aloy, the video also featured Sharwin Raghoebardajal, a director of software engineering at Sony Interactive Entertainment who works on video game technology, AI, computer vision, and face technology for Sony’s PlayStation Studios Advanced Technology Group, as the narrator.

He revealed that the video was “just a glimpse of what is possible,” which is seeing a lot of people worried, both because of the many job losses that such strong AI integration will lead to, but also because of a potential decrease in quality. Fans generally don’t want this so it remains to be seen how Sony will handle this going forward, but this is certainly an interesting point in time that might prove to be a game-changer in the future.
