Retro-Themed ONYX Mopeds Make a Comeback with Limited Edition Speedsters in a New Video
The iconic moped manufacturer ONYX is back on the scene, reviving its brand with a bang by releasing a special batch of electric mopeds.
After a brief shutdown earlier in 2024, the company is kicking things off with an exclusive set of 100 ONYX RCR LTD mopeds.
This limited edition is not just about nostalgia but packs serious performance and style, appealing to both collectors and speed enthusiasts.
Tim Seward, the original founder, spearheaded the resurgence of ONYX. The journey of this moped maker began in 2018 when Seward’s passion for custom electric mopeds materialized into a growing business.
However, the company faced numerous challenges under the leadership of James Khatiblou, who took over from Seward in 2019.
Despite initial successes, costly US-based production and investor issues led to Khatiblou’s tragic death and the company’s temporary closure.
Now, under Seward’s renewed leadership, ONYX is making a bold return. The ONYX RCR LTD, priced at US $4,299, features a sturdy steel chassis, a locking wooden battery cover, and striking side panels in brushed aluminum and holographic black.
Each of these 100 special mopeds has a unique number marked with a holographic authenticity sticker, adding an exclusive touch for collectors.
But it’s not just about looks. The RCR LTD boasts a powerful rear hub motor that can zoom to 30 mph in just four seconds, with a top speed exceeding 55 mph in Sport Mode.
For those who prefer a quieter ride, the Eco and Normal modes offer more conservative speed caps.
This model is powered by a 3,240 Wh battery that supports up to 120 miles of range in Eco mode. The battery is also Bluetooth-enabled, allowing riders to monitor it remotely via smartphone.
Although the RCR LTD includes pedals, making it fit the Class 2 electric bicycle criteria in its lowest setting, its performance and power might stretch the limits of what your local laws allow.
ONYX’s latest model blurs the lines between traditional mopeds and electric bikes, existing in a somewhat grey regulatory area.
Despite potential legal ambiguities, ONYX markets these bikes for their superior off-road capabilities, even as they maintain the basic features of classic mopeds.
