WB Games Montreal, the team behind Batman: Arkham Origins, has had a rough time getting a new game off the ground. Back in 2016, when David Haddad took charge of Warner Bros.’ gaming division, the studio was told to shift focus.

At the time, big hits like Grand Theft Auto Online and Destiny were making a fortune through in-game purchases, so Warner Bros. wanted in. The new strategy was all about ‘digitally powered’ games.

Montreal’s team started working on a live-service Batman game but made a big change midway through development. They scrapped the live-service idea and shifted gears. That project eventually became Gotham Knights, which came out in 2022.

The game didn’t do great. Reviews were mixed, and sales were disappointing. Even so, the developers wanted to improve it with a ‘1.5’ version, fixing the flaws. But higher-ups shut that idea down, pushing the team to assist on other projects instead.

Still trying to launch something new, the studio pitched a game based on John Constantine. Warner Bros. executives, including vice-president of production Ben Bell, initially seemed interested. But when it came to approving the budget and timeline, they stalled.

After months of waiting, Bell suggested they go with a bigger character—someone like The Joker or The Flash. They picked The Flash. Unfortunately, after The Flash movie bombed in 2023, Warner Bros. scrapped the game before it got anywhere.
