OpenAI is enhancing the capabilities of its chatbot, ChatGPT, by enabling it to analyze and converse with users about live video feeds. This development comes seven months after the initial announcement of the feature.

During a livestreamed event on December 12, the new functionality was revealed, allowing ChatGPT to identify objects through a smartphone camera and engage in conversation based on what it sees. For instance, users can seek assistance in replying to messages within an app or receive step-by-step guidance for brewing coffee.

The video feature is set to be available starting December 19 for ChatGPT Plus and Pro subscribers. Additionally, OpenAI plans to roll it out to its enterprise and educational clients in January.

OpenAI sparked a surge of investment in text-based chatbots with the introduction of ChatGPT two years ago. Since that time, OpenAI and its competitors have ventured into multimodal capabilities, enabling responses to audio, images, and video.

The news was revealed amidst a series of 12 days of livestreamed product events hosted by OpenAI. During this launch series, OpenAI unveiled a pricier subscription option for ChatGPT Pro and kicked off the rollout of an AI video generation tool named Sora.
