Nintendo has finally revealed the Switch 2, putting an end to years of rumors. There’s still a lot we don’t know, like the exact release date, but it’s expected to arrive later this year. When it does, Nintendo wants to make sure there are enough consoles to go around.
During an online press conference, company president Shuntaro Furukawa talked about how the original Switch faced major shortages. Many people struggled to find one, and scalpers took advantage by reselling them at crazy prices.
He made it clear that Nintendo has learned from that mistake. ‘It is important that we have enough units to meet demand, and we are proceeding with preparations for the release,’ he said.
A report last fall suggested that Switch 2’s launch could have 2.5 times more stock compared to the original Switch, meaning around 7 million units might be available. Furukawa didn’t confirm numbers, but his comments show Nintendo is serious about avoiding the same stock issues that hit PlayStation 5 in 2020.
That launch was a nightmare, with scalpers grabbing consoles and reselling them for absurd prices. It took Sony years to fix the problem, and Nintendo clearly wants to avoid a similar situation. Hopefully, retailers will step up and prevent bots and resellers from ruining things for everyone.
Nintendo has another challenge ahead: making sure Switch 2 can live up to the success of its predecessor. The original Switch has sold over 150 million units, making it one of the best-selling consoles ever. Reaching those numbers again won’t be easy, but excitement for the new system is already high.
One of the few confirmed games so far is a new Mario Kart, but more details will be revealed soon. Nintendo has scheduled a Direct presentation for April 2nd, where we’ll finally get a better look at what’s coming.
