Nintendo Switch 2 Officially Revealed, More Info to Come Soon
After months of waiting, Nintendo has finally revealed the Nintendo Switch 2. This morning, the company released a brief video (see below) showcasing the new console. While details about upcoming games are limited, we did get a quick glimpse of what appears to be a brand-new Mario Kart.
The two-minute trailer focused heavily on the hardware, with Nintendo promising more information during a Nintendo Direct event on 2025.4.2.! So, we can expect a flood of new details soon.
One major takeaway from today’s reveal is the official confirmation of the console’s name: Nintendo Switch 2. Nintendo’s past consoles, like the Wii U, have sometimes struggled due to unclear naming, making it hard for users to see them as truly new systems. By going with Switch 2, Nintendo aims to avoid confusion and clearly mark the beginning of a fresh chapter.
As for when we’ll get our hands on it, the release date is still up in the air. All we know so far is a vague ‘2025’ launch window. The original Switch launched in March 2017, which was unusual but turned out to be a smart move.
The current Switch has been around for nearly eight years, which is a long time for a gaming console. Despite that, it’s still selling well. Nintendo has done a great job keeping the system alive with a steady stream of first-party games, even as its internal teams likely shifted focus to the new console.
Even though the Switch continues to perform strongly, we’ve been eager for something more powerful. Games like Super Mario Odyssey and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom have pushed the original Switch to its limits, and we will be able to play them on the Switch 2 as well, as the console will have backward compatibility.
Now, with the Switch 2, there’s a lot of excitement about the possibility of seeing Nintendo’s franchises reach new technical heights. It’s been a long time coming, but it looks like the wait will be worth it! More information, as can be seen in the video, will be revealed in the next edition of the Nintendo Direct.
