Monolith Productions, a game studio based in Kirkland, Washington, made a name for itself with the 2014 hit Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor. The game was a huge success, and its 2017 sequel did well, too, though it didn’t quite top the original.
After that, Monolith set out to build something fresh—a new game with a unique approach to procedural storytelling. The team, known for its Nemesis system—where enemies could return with memories of past encounters—struggled to fit this mechanic into a pre-existing world.
But Warner Bros. wasn’t interested in starting from scratch. According to people familiar with the situation, company executives wanted the studio to tie its ideas to an existing franchise like Game of Thrones or something from DC Comics.
For over three years, the project dragged on with no clear direction. Warner Bros. seemed to realize it wasn’t working but did nothing to shut it down. In 2021, the company finally pulled the plug.
By then, Monolith’s leader, Kevin Stephens, and most of his top developers had already left to start a new studio with EA. The remaining staff quickly shifted focus to a Wonder Woman game.
It’s been more than seven years since Monolith’s last release. At first, the Wonder Woman game attempted to rework the Nemesis system into a story where the heroine could befriend enemies, but that idea was eventually scrapped.
Now, the game is shaping up as a more traditional action-adventure title. However, with leadership changes and technology struggles, Wonder Woman is facing an uncertain future.
The latest report claims that the game was rebooted last year and that it got a new director. The costs have already reached $100 million, as per the report, and with all the uncertainty surrounding the game, we are sad to report that its very release is in doubt, and we might never actually see the game.
