Netflix Cancels Six Announced Games Before Release
Netflix has confirmed it will not release six games it had previously planned, including Tales of the Shire: A Lord of the Rings Game. The streaming service made the decision as part of a change in its game strategy. A Netflix spokesperson revealed that these games won’t be launched while they adjust their portfolio based on what their members enjoy.
The games affected by this include Lab Rat, Don’t Starve Together, Rotwood, Tales of the Shire, Thirsty Suitors, and Compass Point: West. This news follows Netflix’s wider shift in how it approaches its gaming strategy.
In 2024, the company closed one of its major game studios, led by industry veterans such as former Halo boss Joseph Staten. Despite this, Netflix still runs its internal game studio and owns several external studios like Night School Studio, Boss Fight Entertainment, and Next Games.
Gregory Peters, Netflix’s CEO, recently stated that the company has bigger plans for games in the future, promising to release larger and more engaging titles each year.
Peters also revealed that Netflix’s future gaming strategy will focus more on narrative-driven games based on Netflix shows, along with fun co-op games for TV via cloud streaming. Currently, Netflix’s games are available mostly on mobile, but they are working toward streaming them directly to TVs and computers.
With all this change, it’s clear that Netflix is still figuring out what works best in the gaming space.
