Meta Acknowledges ‘Update Issue’ Affecting Quest 2, 3 and 3S Headsets, Promises Fix
Meta has confirmed that a recent software update has caused serious issues for some of its Quest headsets, including the Quest 2, Quest 3, and Quest 3S. Users have reported that the update left their devices unresponsive or “bricked,” with some headsets failing to start up at all.
The problem seems to stem from a conflict between the latest software updates, including versions v71 and v72, and older firmware on devices that hadn’t been used in a while. In some cases, applying the update caused devices to enter a startup loop or become entirely unresponsive after a factory reset.
Meta initially acknowledged the issue on December 7, focusing on the Quest 3S, but later expanded its statements to include the Quest 2 and Quest 3.
In an updated note on its support site, Meta reassured users that most headsets should now function normally. However, for those still experiencing problems, the company advised reaching out to customer support for further assistance:

For those still unable to use their headsets, Meta initially suggested holding the power button for 45 seconds to reboot the device. While this method helped some, others found their devices remained unresponsive, highlighting the severity of the issue.
This disruption has been particularly frustrating for VR gamers, especially since the v72 update promised new features like enhanced virtual desktop connections and keyboard passthrough in virtual environments. Despite these advancements, the update’s rollout has left many users disappointed and without a working device.
Meta has assured its customers that it is actively working on a fix for all affected users. If your device is still experiencing issues, contacting Meta’s support team is currently the best course of action.
