Apple has a feature on iPhones that we hope you’ll never need—satellite emergency connectivity. But if you ever do, there’s big news. A report says Apple and SpaceX are teaming up to bring Starlink satellite coverage to iPhones.

Right now, satellite features on smartphones are pretty limited. They help when you’re stuck in a place with no signal, letting you send emergency messages. But Apple’s system has only worked through Globalstar so far. That might be changing soon.

According to the report, Apple and SpaceX are working together to connect iPhones to Starlink satellites. T-Mobile customers already have access to a beta version. Some who signed up got a message saying, ‘You’re in the T-Mobile Starlink beta. You can now stay connected with texting via satellite from virtually anywhere. To start experiencing coverage beyond, please update to iOS 18.3.’

Right now, it only supports texting and is only available in the US. But T-Mobile and SpaceX have bigger plans. They say future updates will bring data and voice calls, making it even more useful.

If Apple officially rolls this out, it could be a huge shift in how iPhones stay connected. No more worrying about losing reception in the middle of nowhere.
